Day Skipper Introduction
Dear Students,
Welcome to the South African Day Skippers Course!
We are pleased to have you join us on this important and exciting step toward becoming confident and competent skippers. Whether your goal is recreational cruising, coastal exploration, or advancing your maritime skills, this course is designed to equip you with both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to safely command a vessel during daylight hours in coastal waters.
Throughout the course, you will cover essential topics including navigation, chart work, collision regulations, safety procedures, weather interpretation, seamanship, and basic engine knowledge. In addition, you will gain hands-on experience that will help you translate classroom learning into real-world confidence on the water.
Safety and responsibility are at the heart of everything we do. As you progress, you will be encouraged to develop sound judgment, strong situational awareness, and respect for the sea and fellow water users. These qualities are just as important as technical skill when it comes to safe skippering.
We encourage you to engage actively, ask questions, and make full use of your instructors’ experience. Learning to skipper a vessel is both challenging and rewarding, and your commitment will be key to your success.
We look forward to guiding you through this journey and helping you achieve your Day Skipper certification.
Fair winds and safe sailing,
Course Instruction Team
