Basic Nautical Terms
Basic Sailing Terms
- Abeam – At a right angle (90°) to the boat’s centerline.
- Aft – Toward the back (stern) of the boat.
- Astern – Behind the boat.
- Bow – The front of the boat.
- Stern – The back of the boat.
- Port – The left side of the boat when facing forward.
- Starboard – The right side when facing forward.
- Beam – The widest part of the boat.
Sailing & Wind
- Tack – Turning the bow through the wind so it comes from the opposite side.
- Jibe (Gybe) – Turning the stern through the wind.
- Close-hauled – Sailing as close to the wind as possible.
- Beam reach – Wind coming from the side.
- Broad reach – Wind coming from behind at an angle.
- Running – Sailing directly downwind.
- Head to wind – Facing directly into the wind (boat loses forward motion).
Sails & Rigging
- Mainsail – The primary sail attached to the main mast.
- Jib – A triangular sail at the front of the boat.
- Genoa – A larger version of a jib.
- Spinnaker – A large sail used for downwind sailing.
- Boom – The horizontal pole supporting the bottom of the mainsail.
- Mast – The vertical pole that supports the sails.
- Rigging – All the lines, cables, and chains supporting the mast and sails.
- Sheets – Lines used to control the angle of the sails.
- Halyard – A line used to raise or lower a sail.
Boat Handling
- Helm – The wheel or tiller used to steer.
- Tiller – A lever used instead of a wheel to steer.
- Leeward – The side sheltered from the wind.
- Windward – The side facing the wind.
- Heeling – When the boat tilts due to wind pressure on the sails.
- Trim – Adjusting sails for optimal performance.
Anchoring & Mooring
- Anchor – A device dropped to the seabed to hold the boat in place.
- Rode – The line or chain attached to the anchor.
- Mooring – Securing a boat to a fixed point (buoy, dock, etc.).
- Cleat – A fitting used to secure lines.
Navigation & Safety
- Bearing – Direction from one point to another, usually in degrees.
- Chart – A nautical map.
- Compass – Instrument used to determine direction.
- Knot – A unit of speed (1 nautical mile per hour).
- Nautical mile – About 1.15 land miles (1.852 km).
- Draft – The depth of water a boat needs to float.
- Keel – The structure along the bottom that stabilizes the boat.
Useful Expressions
- All hands on deck – Everyone is needed.
- Cast off – Untie lines to leave dock.
- Make fast – Secure a line.
- Underway – The boat is moving.
- In irons – Stuck facing into the wind with no forward motion
